Umi No Oya suit l’influence au Japon de Kathleen Drew-Baker, une scientifique de l’université de Manchester qui, en 1949, a réussi à décrire le cycle de vie complexe de l’algue nori. Grâce à ses échanges avec la communauté japonaise de botanistes spécialisés dans les algues de Fukuoka et Kumamoto, elle a joué un rôle déterminant dans le développement de l’aquaculture du nori. Depuis 1963, elle est commémorée par un mémorial situé près du temple shintoïste Sumiyoshi à Uto, dans la préfecture de Kumamoto. Minder et Chardronnet rendent visite aux héritiers de cette histoire à l’occasion de la cérémonie shintoïste célébrant le soixantième anniversaire du mémorial. Le film rend hommage à Drew-Baker comme Umi No Oya (ウミノヲヤ) – la mère de la mer – et cherche l’inspiration dans la résilience qu’elle a insufflée au Kyushu d’après-guerre pour faire face aux nouveaux défis du changement climatique.
